Ridgeway Hut, CO, March 27-30, 2007

After our three nights in the Addie S. hut on Red Mountain Pass, six of us (Aaron, Thorsten, Beckie, Cory, Noah, and I) continued on to Ridgeway for some more skiing. The Ridgeway Hut is in the San Juan Hut System. It was kind of a slog to get in there, about six and a half miles of up & down & up & down before the final up to the hut. For our hike in, there wasn't enough snow on about a quarter of the trail, so we had to carry our skis.

The hut itself is very small and cozy, with bunk beds and a woodburning stove in the middle, but no table and few benches to sit on. It also had a mouse problem. On the plus side, it was located near some sweet terrain for skiing.

The day after we hiked in to the hut, I took a rest day while the other five went skiing. The next day, all of us took two runs in the morning, then all the others except Aaron and I headed home. Aaron took another run. It had started snowing and it didn't stop until the next day---over a foot of freshies by Friday morning! Aaron and I took another run in the morning in the sweetest powder and then skied out.

You can also see Cory's pictures from the trip.

A little bit of freshies on the ski poles before those five went skiing.

This is what I did with my free time, modular origami polyhedra.

I'm not done with this big one yet. The joints will fit together better when it's completed.

Meanwhile, Aaron took these next few pictures as they were out skiing. Noah in front of the slopes.

And more Noah.

Everyone except Aaron.

Amy skiing, not very gracefully, as the snow is coming down. It kind of looks like I'm telemarking, except I'm not.

It kept DUMPING all afternoon.

Face shots!

Excessive zooming in on that last picture. It was SUCH sweet snow.

The trees were just so pretty on the hike out. I can't do them justice with the pictures.

The trees were sluffing snow all over the place. A few times we each took a direct hit, but I didn't catch any photos of that.

The bluebird day disappeared and it started snowing again.
