Hat Creek Mapping Project, April 2001

In April of 2001, I went on a mapping project with Dr. Brimhall, a professor of mine at UC Berkeley, and three others. The project was to map an area where the SETI Institute and UC Berkeley will be putting 350 closely spaced radio telescopes. This area is north of Mt. Lassen---a region of quaternary volcanic activity. There are fresh lava flows in the area where the telescopes will be built, and the terrain is very rough. Using George's mapping software and his GPS and computer equipment, the five of us mapped the lava surface to within 1 meter accuracy. Here are some pictures from that trip. Also, here are George's pictures.

We got a ride in this contraption that lifted us very high off the ground. Here's one of the Hat Creek telescopes as we rose.

The view from up high: our discarded GPS vests, and a dog, who is just sleeping, not dead.
