Flat Mountain Yurt and Heaven's Hill, Feb-Mar 2009

We tried a new backcountry yurt this year, located on Cumbres Pass near Flat Mountain on the Colorado/New Mexico border. The yurt was fine, the skiing nearby was OK, but the area is really packed with snowmobilers. Both days of the weekend, there were massive groups (i.e. around 10 snow machines) and lots of smaller parties of snowmobilers zooming around in the area, highpointing on the nice slopes. Oh, well. Aaron, Thorsten, Deb, Lindsey, Mark, and I had a good time anyway.

There are also some pictures here from a day on Heaven's Hill in our own local mountains.

On the first day, we did a long tour over a ridge towards Flat Mountain. Here is Amy at our lunch stop along the ridge.

Lindsey and I took a few nice (but short) runs along the way then headed back; Mark, Thorsten, and Aaron went all the way to Flat Mountain in search of a mega long run. This is what they skied (photo: Aaron).
