Death Valley, March 8-12, 2001

These are pictures from a geology class field trip to Death Valley with our professor, Walter Alvarez. I had a brand-new camera and a brand-new tent, and it was in some ways a life-changing experience (I'm writing this now in 2006, after the crash of the webpage server, so these words are only in retrospect with a few years' time to think about it). I think it is because of this trip that I became a climber, and that's been the greatest thing that happened to me.

This is where we camped the first night in Death Valley.

Limestone in Mosaic Canyon.

Calcite rings in Titus Canyon.

More of the same.

Castle in the Clay, where we camped for the next two nights.

A very cool, colorful breccia.

An outcrop in Ute, Nevada.
